SK Group to Tighten Belt, Focus on Stability in 2001
November 1, 2000 (SEOUL) -- The SK Group said that it will tighten its belt regarding new investments and focus on increasing its cash status in a move to prepare for the possibility of another economic crisis.

The conglomerate, which had made aggressive investments in the finance, telecom and Internet sectors this year, said it has changed tack and will focus on reducing fixed assets and increasing its finances.

The chaebol, which has been vying to win operation rights for the next-generation IMT-2000 telecommunications services, said it plans to strengthen ties with Chinese and Japanese telecommunications firms.

Regarding a merger between local petrochemical firms, SK said chances of a merger will likely occur in the span of one to two years.
