The reliability of SUNW's high end systems is mediocre. I think that the I/O problems and the cache problems, both of which were in a sense designed in, and represented compromises that IBM, HP and CPQ would never have made, will hurt SUNW more than is immediately perceived.

SUNW got an amazing chance at the big time with their purchase of the UE10000 technology (which SGI got with CRAY), but they have not built the enterprise infrastructure to support their ambitions, and they now look to me to be behind the curve.

Once a company invests in that technology it can take a while to shift away. We will see over the next few quarters if SUNW's high end momentum has slowed. The midrange products are being pulled by the big systems. When you consider that SUNW sold only 500 UE10000 servers last quarter in a total of over 100,000 servers, you can see the importance of that high end pull.
