It is my experience that bad management often is not intentional. Mid-level managers removed from the situation dictate policy, and front-line managers are unable to carry out this policy without abusing workers. Often managers just shrug their shoulders and say, "I'm just following orders." This is happening more and more in the workplace as companies downsize, replace experienced people with temporary workers, continue to hammer at unions, etc. And what drives this policy? Unrealistic goals of 12 percent growth per year, etc. The guy who's messing up your life isn't your direct supervisor, it's some guy who makes a couple hundred grand a year in a different city.
