<I would prefer a consumption tax with no tax forms to be filled out. Of course again, some rebate on the early dollars up to some reasonable level so that the working poor and welfare would pay no or low taxes.>

Frank,

I have long been a proponent of a value added or sales tax for all of the reasons you mentioned. In addition such a tax would effectively claim tax revenues from the tremendous underground economy which exists in this country. Income derived from criminal activity which obviously escapes taxation would also generate tax revenue. All one need do is look upon the lavish spending of even the lowest level of drug dealers and petty criminals to understand the implications.

Technology currently exists to easily allow the first $25,000 or whatever amount settled upon, of low income or any earners to be free of sales tax. The biggest road block is the government itself. After years of contriving every means possible to monitor the wealth of it's citizens, the government would be loathe to relinquish such knowledge.

The current system is corrupt, and the corrupters do not want change. Hopefully as more and more tax payers become knowledgeable and familiar with the ramifications of such a system, demand will force lawmakers to yield. At present too many taxpayers wallow in apathy and ignorance to back the voice of change. Another case of remaining atop a dead horse.
