PRESS RELEASE:Oplink Commun Unveils Fiber-Optic Switch

Oplink Delivers Fiber Optic Mechanical Switch With One of the Industry's
Lowest Insertion Loss and Smallest Form Factor
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Oplink Communications, Inc.

(Nasdaq: OPLK), designer and manufacturer of innovative optical components and
integrated optical modules announced the introduction of its new 1X2
fiber-optic mechanical switch. The patented mechanical switch boasts
industry-leading performance specifications. It features less than 0.35 dB
typical insertion loss, less than 0.50 dB maximum insertion loss, and the
smallest size of any device of its kind available today. Designed for use in
configurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers, Optical Cross-Connect systems and
optical system performance monitoring and fault protection applications, its
compact size (40 x 15.5 x 9.5 mm) allows the switch to be easily integrated
into high-density optical systems.

The switch connects optical channels by redirecting an optical signal into a
selected output fiber. Oplink's switch is optically passive; therefore it is
transparent both to signaling format and bandwidth. In addition, internal
latching mechanisms preserve the optical path even after power loss. The 1X2
switch is extremely stable and reliable across the entire optical wavelength
(1310, 1550 dual band or C+L band) and temperature range (minus 20 to 75
degrees C).

Oplink is currently providing design and qualification assessment components
to the optical industry. Volume production is scheduled for November 2000. The
switch is expected to cost in the range of $400 to $500 per unit.
