Gore has generally sided with the moderates over the last eight years and has
angered many liberals. The list is long: He supported welfare reform; they lamented
the end of the federal guarantee. He supports globalization of trade; they are
protectionists who distrust corporate power. He backs the death penalty; they
don't. He partook in the campaign fund-raising abuses of 1996; they want to take
big money out of politics. And populist rhetoric aside, he says little about the
growing income gap between rich and poor; they want to stress the issue.

So they have felt little allegiance to Gore. As presidential historian Allan Lichtman
said yesterday: "Ralph Nader is just a reflection of Gore's problems, a symptom.
He is not the cause."
