Telekom Malaysia Optical Grids To Be Installed By Yr-End
KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)--Telekom Malaysia Bhd.'s (P.TEL) two parallel high-capacity optical networks will be installed by the year-end, Marconi (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. said Wednesday.
In a news conference, Marconi Malaysia Managing Director Giacomo Licata said the optical networks, which run the length of Peninsula Malaysia, will be used by Telekom Malaysia primarily for its Internet business.

Telekom Malaysia is Malaysia's largest telecommunications company and Marconi Malaysia is a unit of British telecommunications equipment maker Marconi PLC. (U.MNI).

Licata said the optical networks will use Marconi's dense wave division multiplexing technology which will boost the bandwidth capacity of Telekom Malaysia's fiber-optic network by eight times.

The technology multiplies the carrying capacity of each optical fiber strand by splitting light into dozens of separate wavelengths. Each wavelength can carry digital data at very high rates.

He said the project is part of the MYR230 million contract awarded by Telekom Malaysia to Marconi Malaysia, announced late last year.
