It depends on your risk aversion, but 2% of a portfolio in one short is too much of a starting position for me. If it ballooned to 10% of my portfolio, I would lose sleep.

Suppose you earn 5% on your portfolio by shorting in small positions. Is that disappointing? I think not.

It's a return that you get on top of whatever you are earning on the long portion of your portfolio. I think that earning 5% extra, over the long term, will make your portfolio performance superior. Fund managers would just die for an extra 5% every year compared to their peers.
