Does anyone have an insight why some telcoms like Alcatel are faring better than others (ATT) these days? Luck, management, markets, products?

I believe both ATT and LU have loaned money to internet start-ups, and now there is some doubt that they'll ever get their money back, so they'll have to take some huge write-offs. I think that would fall under "poor management". I can't find the news story on this, but I did find this one:
