I believe the new spectrum for 3G will mean new infrastructure, not an overlay to existing 2G equipment.

I would think world-wide roaming would be one big reason to go wCDMA. Remember the carriers don't pay the royalties, directly anyway.

I'm still waiting to see if wCDMA is ever going to make it out of the lab (much like edge).
