TRI-VISION LAUNCHES THE V.GIS™ “QUICK V-CHIP” AS A SIMPLE, USER-FRIENDLY INTERFACE FOR GLOBAL APPLICATION “Quick V-Chip” Makes Technology Simple To Use Regardless Of The Country’s Ratings System and Language
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2000 – TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA – Tri-Vision International Ltd./Ltée is pleased to announce that it has developed a user-friendly interface that can be used in tandem with Tri-Vision's sophisticated V.gis™ v-chip technology. This will simplify parents control over their children's exposure to violence and other television content.
Using the “Quick V-chip” in conjunction with Tri-Vision’s proprietary V.gis™ v-chip technology, parents will no longer have to struggle with understanding different program ratings systems in order to use v-chip capabilities.
A number of reports and statements have pointed out that parents neither fully understand the categories of v-chip rating or how to use it. This lack of understanding has prompted Tri-Vision to develop the “Quick V-chip” as the solution. While the U.S. Administration has called for a single ratings system, the broadcast industry has not responded as yet.
In his State of the Union address on January 27, 2000, President Clinton stated that “. . . every parent I know worries about the impact of violence in the media on their children. I want to begin by thanking the entertainment industry for accepting my challenge to put voluntary ratings on TV programs and video and Internet games. But, frankly, the ratings are too numerous, diverse and confusing to be really useful to parents. So tonight, I ask the industry to accept the First Lady's challenge to develop a single voluntary rating system for all children's entertainment that is easier for parents to understand and enforce. The steps I outline will take us well on our way to making America the safest big country in the world.”
In response to the problems of parents understanding the v-chip and how it works, Tri-Vision has developed the solution in the form of the “Quick V-chip”.
How “Quick V-chip” Works "Quick V-chip" is an intelligent user-friendly, interface that makes it easy for parents to set up the v-chip using knowledge that they already have: the age of their children. To program the V-Chip, parents simply select the age level from a menu, using the remote control, and TV programs are automatically limited to those suitable for the selected age.
Parents can select any age that they see fit, according to their own family values and TV programs are automatically limited to those appropriate for children of that age. A "Quick V-Chip" reference list has been developed for parents to consult so they understand the effect of age selection programming. Parents can also customize their viewing criteria using more comprehensive rating selection features as they become more familiar with the rating systems and more comfortable with the v-chip technology. The Need For V-chip Technology Television is a powerful learning tool and a highly influential media. Television can instruct, encourage and inspire. But when it showcases violence - particularly in a context that glamorizes or trivializes violence - the lessons learned can be destructive. The conclusion of the U.S. public health community, based on over 30 years of research, is that viewing entertainment violence can lead to increasingly aggressive attitudes, values and behavior, particularly in children.
Tri-Vision continues to educate the consumers and television manufacturers about the benefits of v-chip technology in general and of its proprietary V.gis™ v-chip technology.
Tri-Vision President Completes Three-Week Meeting Tour With TV Manufacturers In Several Far-Eastern Countries
“The selling of innovative technology is a on going process, with our continuing hard work and with the interaction we have had with TV manufacturers, I feel more optimistic than ever before in our ability to convince TV manufacturers of the value of our V.gis™ technology," stated Siddiqui. "Tri-Vision, together with Nichimen Corporation, is actively pursuing licensing opportunities worldwide," added Siddiqui, who has just returned from a very productive three-week meeting tour with TV manufacturers in several Far-Eastern countries.
Tri-Vision’s unique, field upgradeable v-chip technology has the ability to accommodate different TV ratings systems in addition to the two now being used in the U.S. A significant number of organizations have recommended that v-chip technology used by TV manufacturers be flexible in order to accommodate ratings systems changes.
