Santa Clara, California, Nov. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Palm Inc., the world's largest maker of handheld electronic organizers, and International Business Machines Corp. said they will jointly create business software that works with the Palm operating system.
IBM, the world's largest computer maker, will train a team of experts to develop tools to meet the needs of business customers of IBM and Palm. Terms weren't disclosed.
Both companies are eager to add products that enable businesses to let employees work remotely. They want to allow workers to use wireless Internet connections to gain secure access to corporate databases and office software. IBM, based in Armonk, New York, makes software that allows specialized wireless connections to corporate networks and makes the servers that run those networks.
Palm agreed to promote IBM as a ''preferred'' technology services provider to Palm's business customers, said Palm spokesman Jerry Cashman.
The shares of Palm, based in Santa Clara, California, rose $1 to $54.56. The stock has gained 44 percent since the company's March initial public offering. IBM rose 6 cents to $98.56, and has fallen 8 percent this year. |
