Virata Shares Surge on Cisco Software Deal

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shares of Virata Corp. (NasdaqNM:VRTA - news), a maker of chips and software used in high-speed DSL modems, surged nearly 24 percent on Wednesday after it said that Cisco Systems Inc., the biggest maker of networking gear, will license Virata software.

The software Cisco is licensing lets users more easily manage devices or programs remotely using just a standard Web browser.

Cisco (NasdaqNM:CSCO - news) will use Virata's EmWeb HTTP server and client software and integrate it into Cisco's IOS software, which is the operating system that drives its routers and switches. Cisco said that the Virata technology will make it easier for customers to configure and manage networks.
