Review - BlackBerry 957 - Internet Edition

G'Day advalorem

Thought there was a need to post a review (rather long and very descriptive) that reflected the aspects of this device. His photos are a bit distorted and doesn't really show the unit at its best.

Overall Impressions

In case you can't tell from the review, I really love this device. I've been commenting on it since August in our PDAGeek blurb as well. The best part about it is that you can take it with you anywhere and not miss an e-mail. In addition, I have actually done business by first receiving an e-mail, checking a secure part of Geek.com utilizing Go.Web, and then responding to the e-mail--all away from the office while on vacation. You can't beat that level of convenience!

I've been a wireless Internet access user for quite some time now, and before the Blackberry came into my life I would have to figure out the best way to balance two devices so that they could communicate with each other. With the Blackberry it's all one device and it's constantly connected.

As for battery life, when I first started using it daily I forgot to place it in its cradle. Luckily, I went for over two weeks without the device needing a recharge. Pretty amazing for a device that has a wireless modem and a 386 processor inside and is CONSTANTLY in use. At one point I did try to shut off the device and found that while it shut off fine, I did experience a delay in receiving my e-mail once I turned it back on. I'm not sure if that was a specific case or not but I've been afraid to try ever since. (I have never experienced this delay, besides when it's placed in it's holster it is automatically put into a sleep mode to conserve the battery power. You will still be notified, with multiply choices of tone's combined with or without vibrations, when you recieve a new piece of email, page or private message from another BlackBerry user)

This guy even supplies a link to 'Tucows' who recently set up a software area dedicated to the Blackberry (RIM) device and there are games now, I didn't even know that it was up and running yet. Will be downloading and trying out on my BlackBerry 957 Internet Edition as soon as I get the time.

He notes in his regular column that he hasn't been able to confirm the AOL connection and I will email him this information:

What is AOL Mobile Communicator?

AOL Mobile Communicator is a two-way messaging device that gives AOL members another way to access the popular AOL instant messaging and e-mail features. AOL Mobile Communicator makes it fun and easy for AOL Members to keep in touch with friends and family. Take your AOL e-mail and Buddy List® with instant messages with you anytime, anywhere....

This doesn't seem to be the same version as the other RIM 850/950, see the pics at site above... It's blue and looks like it's semi-transparent, that is the AOL branded RIM device that will be marketed through AOL and network service will be through BellSouth Wireless Data Division (Mobitex data network). I don't know the details, but I'm sure there will be more information in the near future as they will want this to be available for Xmas.

remember it ain't a BlackBerry if it doesn't have the BlackBerry software inside... there are RIM950/850's and then there are RIM950/850's with BB software that then are christened to be a true BlackBerry.... so many have confused this since BlackBerry is such a catchy name and easier to reference to.

850/950/957 (also available now is the 857, same as the 957 but operates over the Motient/ARDIS network)

I believe the AOL Mobile Communicator will not have the BB software installed. I think RIM had to write new software in order to run AOL and reconfigure some stuff. Sorry you're talking to a non-techie, just self taught and I try my best to understand. Have you ever visited the RIM Developer Zone? If not you might want to:

Nice to see a forum set up to discuss PDA/Handhelds. I hope to pop in every so often and I will try to catch up with the historical postings here. WOW, there's allot!
