I would argue that there were larger forces at work which helped to end the Cold War than simply Reagan.

Someone had to demonstrate the political will at that point in time, when the Soviet system was showing severe signs of strain, to press onward aggressively with the military buildup. Eventually the Soviets and the rest of the Warsaw pact recognized the futility of the race. Reagan never wavered in his resolve to tear down the wall.
