RE: CERN

Ray,

Here is a link with three presentations that talk about some of the technical aspects of the grid:

grid.web.cern.ch

From this information it looks like they will be using a lot of storage, including a large amount of multiuser tape storage. The information talks primarily about teleco speeds and some communication distances of 1000 km. It also discusses the issue of tuning TCP/IP over distances. CERN used to have an FC page, but they stopped updating it. They use FC's supercomputer brother - HIPPI in some sites. They also posted the original on line test result for Brocade's Silkworm and I believe at some point commented that they bought it because it worked as advertised:

atddoc.cern.ch

I can't find anything related to how they will connect their storage. I think this is probably fairly typical of many of these projects and also literature that is LAN/WAN focused. On the other hand CERN probably has a lot of pages, it might be there somewhere.
