2000--HONG KONG] China has squeaked by Japan as the top mobile phone market in Asia, according to results of a study announced Wednesday by Dataquest, a unit of Gartner Group.

In the first quarter of this year, China's cellular phone subscribers swelled to 51.7 million, surpassing Japan's 51.1 million subscribers, the company said.

The strong growth of the China market lifted the overall cellular phone market in Asia Pacific. Dataquest said the regional market grew to 170.7 million subscribers in the first quarter of this year, a strong 47 percent increase over the same period last year. In the first quarter of 1999, the regional market only had 115.9 million subscribers.

Mobile phone use could also mean significant growth of wireless Internet access, via Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and future systems. "I think that naturally as China is now the region's largest cell phone market, the potential exists for China to become the largest wireless Internet market," said Mark Begert, director of international strategic development of Intrinsic Technology Limited, a Shanghai-based wireless technology developer.

Japan leads the region in wireless Internet access, in part because of over 10 million users of NTT DoCoMo's i-Mode service.
