My thoughts on Crosstor:

1. EMC says NTAP's current product is a mid-range product. NTAP's
current mid-range product *outperforms*, both performance and price-
performance, EMC's "high-end" Symmetrix, never mind its NAS-Celerra-
Symmetrix combo.

2. EMC is creating chameliion to address the mid-range. Since NTAP's
supposedly "mid-range" product outperforms EMC's high-end Symmetrix,
how will chameliion compete?

3. Crosstor, apparently, already ships their file system with Auspex's
lastest NAS product and their performance numbers, never mind sales,
are lousy. What does that say about Crosstor technology?

I think Crosstor is probably a great PR campaign for EMC because it
gives the appearance that they are addressing a *gaping hole* in
their technology. However, I have seen nothing from Crosstor that
leads me to believe that their technology is on par with NTAP.

This does give EMC some new engineering talent. The question is,
do they really get anything technology-wise that helps them leap
forward or simply get some heads in the R&D department and a
so-so product? I don't have that answer, but it will be interesting
to watch.

I don't think you can add 100 employees to a 17,000 employee
company and radically change their thinking.

All my lowly, humble, opinion.
