The thing is that I am not worried about what GE pays. I just want to feel there is fairness and equity. I want the code trashed and start from ground zero to build a code that is fair across the board to all citizens. Someone made the point that corporations really don't pay taxes and that is true. Like a hidden value added tax they simply increase prices on their product or service to compensate for the money they have to send the government. I really believe a consumption tax would be the answer. The rate could be one that would be revenue neutral. (brings in a similar amount of money) There would need to be a safety net for the vulnerable (a rebate of based on income for the taxes paid up to some level). The two extra sweeteners you would get are the underground economy would get a little stuck and pay far more taxes with their purchases. As an aside, I was amazed a couple years ago when I visited NYC. I was shopping in a couple electronic stores and, bargaining a little, I was told if I would pay cash they would waive the sales tax. Not real fair or good. The second giant source of assistance would be foreign tourists. They would pay a lot toward funding our government. We, in Florida, have that benefit with our tourism and our sales tax. We have no state income tax because primarily of that benefit.
