Joe, <I have heard, though, that Intel plans on using it (P6 core) as their sole notebook chip for a very, very long time.>

The good news (for Intel) is that this is a very sound strategy. The mobile guys seem very good at using the P6 core to achieve a balance between performance and power consumption, then pushing that envelope even further. Why change a formula that works?

The bad news, however, is that the field is wide open for some breakthrough product to enter the mobile market. Transmeta may be dropping the ball right now, but they could get it right the second or third time around. Then Intel will be stuck with a processor core which is fundamentally inferior for the mobile market (assuming Intel doesn't have something else planned in the near future).
