As the Republican Party has become more ideological, it is less prone to engage in "corporate welfare" than the Democrats, especially since the Democrats are more interested in promoting growth than "equality" in the last decade. I suppose that to be the basis of the comments, although I cannot say for sure.

By the way, I am thinking of taking a trip to England this summer. I had an irritating experience with inexpensive accommodations in Paris. Are you familiar with American standards of lodging? And if so, are there any moderately priced hotels in London that an American might find comfortable?
