I'm glad to see a livelier debate.

>How come Mark Lepine was able to murder all those women in Quebec with a registered firearm?

The firearm in question (a good deer rifle, by the way) would have been registered if the system was in place then. It is not important to your point, but rifles were not registered then. However, Lepine was issued a Firearms Acquisition Certificate, which entails a police background check.

Lepine's rampage is what started the ball rolling on the current legislation, and is what got Wendy Cukier all fired up. I can't say I blame her for her position, because she was close to the event. It is an ironic tragedy that the legislation that came out of it would have had no impact on the outcome.

The Alliance's firearms control plan seems to make much more sense. It goes further in ensuring that owners are competent but doesn't inflate a black market in firearms like the Liberal plan. It also maintains the innocent-until-proven-guilty premise of our legal system, and doesn't penalize legitimate owners, unlike C68.

>If only the libertarians weren't such extremists ... at least they're consistent, they advocate individual responsibility/freedom with one's money and one's body as well.

Hey! I resemble that remark!
Only extreme libertarians are extreme, much like extreme socialists or conservatives.
