however the mentally disabled are still regarded with fear and ignorance.

You want to know why?

Because I opine that many of us see them and suddenly realize, "Except by the grace of god, there goes I"...

Mental disabilities derive far more fear and loathing than physical ones because they remind people that this could be (or have been) THEIR child, and like warding off evil spirits, they instinctively react with hostility.

And mental disabilities are more disturbing because unlike a physcial disability where a person's mind may still be quite lucid, mentally disabled people are almost impossible to deal with on an equal level.

I can say, "hey that crippled person is still someone I can relate to on an intellectual level if I try".

But few can relate to mentally impaired individuals in such a manner.

My prayers go with you...
