There's nothing wrong with investing money in the stock market. The problem with the Bush plan is that it would divert up to a trillion dollars from the current fund....which would bring it's current bankruptcy date into the current generation. That's not smart and it would probably just about destroy future support for the Republican party (which is pretty much fine with me but there should be some balance). Now, if some portion of the current excess balance of T-Bills held by the SSA were simply placed into the market (maybe 5, 10 percent), the amount of return would likely increase over time. That's probably a better plan.
