tom-

in the late 80s there was a man traveling the united states in a motor home campaigning for president. his campaign wasn't for the 1988 election, it was for the year 2000. he said he wanted to get an early start because he was not well known and had no political party affiliations. he parked his motor home in the drive and stayed at my house for a few days while he set up interviews with the local tv and radio stations. he was a bit of a nerdy guy, smoked a pipe and looked a little like a cross between jim willie and tim smigelski. he was totally serious, though many didn't take him that way, but he wasn't a wacko like you might suspect.

his platform was one of love, caring and human kindness. totally removed from the normal business and government way of life, he saw what most of us would consider "naive" solutions for all the world's problems. he was a student of the indian religious teacher jiddu krishnamurti and had written his Ph.d thesis on those teachings.

i had just bought a video camera and was producing some programming for public access tv so we did a walk-through documentary of his traveling campaign headquarters that i cablecast on the local public access cable channel. i asked somewhat irreverent and wacky questions as we moved around his motor home bumping into each other and he answered as kindly as he could without getting mad or impatient with me. i remember, after he gave what seemed a rather naive answer about u.s. relations with iran, i quizzed him slyly about what was in the pipe he was smoking and he pulled out his tobacco pouch and went into a lengthy explanation about the flavoring, cut and blend. he did have a sense of humor and at one point conceded that he would consider me for a cabinet position as minister of silly walks if he were elected.

he stayed up till three am with me one night and we talked about the meaning and purpose of life. he was touched by some of my thoughts and we shared a couple of hours feeling as close as two human beings ever get to one another.

he kept in touch for three or four years and sent campaign newsletters on a periodic basis, but i haven't heard of or from him for at least eight years. he was extremely appreciative of kath's and my hospitality while he was in town and we wished (and still do) that the world were evolved enough for a man of such simple goodness to be considered for the office of president of the united states.

as you might imagine, thinking about george w. bush and albert gore as our choices for president this year is not pleasant for me. i'll be voting for dr. larry holden.

no, i'm not crazy dude. the rest of you are. ;-) but i still love you.
