It's three days after Halloween, but I'm a little scared.

I'm scared because the United States, a nation I love, seems poised to elect a president who is unqualified, intellectually dishonest or both.

Because his chief opponent has squandered his opportunity by pandering and worse.

Because an egomaniacal third-party candidate who surely knows better sees no problem in helping elect the candidate whose positions are least like his own.

Because the media covering the election are overwhelmingly more interested in tracking polls than serious issues or candidates' lies.

Because we have let wealth, power and trivia overwhelm all other considerations.

Our political system has truly become ``one dollar, one vote'' -- a national travesty that should shame us.

I'd hoped that the Internet would be more helpful this time, particularly to get the attention of younger voters who are so casually dismissed by the political system. The Net is a conversation, and we sorely need to have a genuine discussion in this nation about what we face in coming years and decades.

A few sites have tried to cut through the sludge, to have that conversation. But there's little sign that the Net overall has had any impact.

When will the Net make a real difference? I'm guessing 2008.

Meanwhile, we're stuck with business as usual. That's why this Election Day scares me. Business as usual is not good enough.
