Holiday Shoppers

ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 2000--Ames
Department Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMES) today announced the launch of
its full-line e-commerce web-site, AmesPlace.com and the introduction of
on-line shopping for Ames customers.
AmesPlace.com is the Internet subsidiary of Ames Department Store, Inc.
which incorporates all Internet initiatives including on-line bargain shopping,
prescription fulfillment at Amesmeds.com, company information at
Amesstores.com and links to other on-line retailers.
AmesPlace.com extends the walls of its brick and mortar stores by offering
customers their trademark, "Bargains By The Bagful" on-line. Rolando de
Aguiar, President of AmesPlace.com, stated that Ames' latest e-commerce
initiative is focused on meeting the needs of its core customers. "Ames'
customers are the fastest growing segment on the Internet," de Aguiar noted.
"We're now well positioned to meet their holiday on-line needs. By offering
items that are not usually found in our stores, we're giving them even more
choices and values for their hard-earned dollars.
"Our initial merchandise assortment will focus on our core customer's holiday

Customers will have the ability to view history and track orders while shopping
on-line. As an additional measure of service and convenience, returns will be
accepted at all store locations. In addition, 55 Gold(R) members will receive a
10% discount on purchases each Tuesday by using their membership card
on-line.
