"Tell them it's personal, it's none of their
business," Gore's chief of staff Peter Knight
barked on the other end of the phone. "Don't talk
to them," he exhorted.

By "them" Knight meant reporters, who were sure
to be asking new questions about Gore's personal
life. The "Monkey Business" sex scandal had just
topedoed Colorado Senator Gary Hart's
presidential bid, and Gore knew that the topics
of marital fidelity and past drug use were
suddenly on the table.

Gore also knew that Warnecke was one of a handful
of people who knew the truth about his years of
regular marijuana consumption.
