I grew up in the remote reaches of the rural South. I know personally tin-foil sculptors, Appalachian folk artists, sea island basket weavers, and pompous college professors--all 'artists'. For myself, I find much to like in 'folk art' of the region. Especially the 'primitive' painters. I only wish I had bought a bunch of it back in the '70's when the good stuff was really affordable. I became aware of Haitian art about 10 years ago--there was a nice, small gallery in Charleston that had quite a collection. Don't know if it is still there or not.
