Friday Nov 3 2000 News Release

Mr. Ben Van Dyk Reports:

Findings of a recent study have resulted in the development of several specialized horticultural products designed for the professional turf, nursery and greenhouse markets.

Growth trials conducted on common grass species at the University of British Columbia, faculty of agricultural sciences by professors R.J. Copeman, F.B. Holl and C.P. Chanway, showed the IBR fertilizer formulation outperformed the current industry standard fertilizer, as well as the most current organic fertilizer alternative.

In addition, the turf quality, density, and colour were generally superior for the IBR-treated turf. The results of this trial confirm the superior growth performance of IBR products, along with notable improvements in health and appearance.

IBR is using the results of the UBC research to develop leading-edge fertility formulations. Evergro Canada Inc. has introduced products incorporating the IBR technology under the ON-Core trademark into the professional turf, nursery, greenhouse, specialty vegetable, berry and forestry industries.

"The horticultural market represents 121 million acres worldwide," stated Evergro's product and marketing manager, Bruce Vance. "These new products hold a lot of promise and we expect that they will set the new standard in the professional horticultural markets."

In the last year, IBR has established a distributor relationship with Evergro Canada Inc., a commercial blender of commercial fertilizer products with distribution in Canada and the Northwestern United States.

The growing public sentiment toward naturally derived alternatives has been highlighted this past summer in pending federal legislation in a move toward biological alternatives. IBR's products have been proven to economically reduce reliance on chemical fertilizer inputs while improving performance.

The company has been using the results of studies such as this to develop unique formulations of its naturally derived products to address the most lucrative markets and applications. IBR will be expanding its line of specialized fertilizer products and their distribution as new manufacturing facilities come into operation.

Controlled scientific trials provide statistical evidence to corroborate the product benefits and superior performance observed in numerous field demonstration trials using IBR products. In this UBC study, two turf species, Bentgrass and Bluegrass, were grown in washed river sand in 30-centrimetre by 30-centimetre plastic trays with perforated bottoms over a 100-day period. The six different treatments for turf included three IBR formulations, chemical fertilizer, organic turf fertilizer Sustane, as well as two negative controls.

This study established that the greatest growth of grass, as measured by total clippings, was achieved using the IBR formulation. Initially, the grass receiving the control treatment had the highest mean dry weight. In subsequent clippings, grass receiving these treatments declined as the nutrients were used or leached from the sand medium. However, grass receiving the IBR treatments had increasing yields at each harvest, surpassing all other treatments by the end of the trial.

In addition to clippings yield, the turf was evaluated at intervals for quality and/or colour using the National Turf evaluation program visual rating system. Quality assessments for both Bluegrass and Bentgrass were superior for the IBR treatment.
