Yogi,
I appears that another "Bougainville" situation may be developing. Its a shame that such a fine orebody could be idled, with the machinery and mill left to rust, not to mention the billions of equity that may be wiped out. As FCX produces over 5% of free world copper,I would expect a sharp spike up in copper prices if Grassberg is idled, with prices staying up until new Chilean production from mine expansions and new mine development can overcome the supply deficit again. I would have thought that any such negative political developments would have to be reported by Freeport, at least as a cautionary statement warning shareholders of the immediate risks associated with the current state of unrest and anti-American activities underway in Jakarta. On another related topic, I have to wonder if Newmont's share price has been beaten up because of market nervousness about their recent $2 billion investment in a new open pit porphyry copper-gold mine in this region of the world?
regards,
teevee
