JC - no, that's according to YOUR logic. I didn't say anything like that.

Sun beat the other Unix players by a combination of stable OS, good middleware, Java "mindshare", and a more potent high end offering. Also great marketing, to be sure.

In the NAS space, they have an offering which is more expensive and less powerful than the competition. On its own, that offering was losing to almost everyone else - they were #8 in a market they entered at the beginning, so the late entries were able to take share with ease. Cobalt has also done nothing but lose money.

I think it was just a placeholder move to round out Sun's offering, and at $2B it is an expensive placeholder.
