Re: Wireless Roadmap, Forked Roads and WCDMA

Hi Jim,

That probably wasn't among Andy's best, IMHO. Though I did find his logic about Voicestream's potential valuation change to be interesting. :)

I found myself getting a far more insightful view of what is coming up in this SI contributor's opinion:

Given this, if they deploy (WCDMA) chips today, it takes a min of 18 months to build a handset, even if you know what your doing and the testing is mature. Add another year to get the testing right so that yields are good. It takes another 18 months to work out a lot of handset related standards issues. 150k users by 2004 is actually agressive for what I see implemented today.

I don't know "engineer" personally. From what he writes, it appears that he is Qualcomm employee, and thus perhaps partisan. However, I have no doubt about the timeframe he describes. And the implications for investors betting on the rapid roll-out of 3G services. (Snoop around the Seybold site to see the snake-oil blurb about the trillion$ to be made in wireless. It's...............priceless.)

Best, Ray
