Mike, I collect art, as well as rare books and manuscripts. Perhaps it's short-sighted of me, but I have never really looked upon these items as "investments". They do enrich me with their presence in my life, but I've not thought about them in monetary terms until recently. I found out the current bidding price of some manuscripts that I own, and I realized that I have gotten about a 25% annualized return - very favorable in comparison with equities. I think I got lucky- but I'd like to be more systematic about this, if possible. Is there a set of criteria that you use to evaluate whether a particular work is "undervalued"? Can the value concept be extended to art?
