if that would be the filter that was installed in the system when DSL was put in, then it's outside in the phone box...it appeared to me that the idea was to filter all the phones in the house.

If the filter is outside in the phone box than you must have two phone lines coming into your house. One for POTS, plain old telephone service, and one for DSL. In this case connect your analog modem to your POTS line.
