SGI Releases Gigabyte System Network Electronic News Nov 03, 2000 --- Mountain View, Calif.-based SGI Inc. today introduced its Gigabyte System Network, dubbed HIPPI-6400, that it says is ideal for data mining, transaction processing, and storage management.
SGI believes its GSN technology offers the highest bandwidth and lowest latency standards available. It is targeted at companies that need to move large amounts of data quickly and efficiently, SGI said, and is ideal for scientific and technical computing as well as other applications. The company believes its network is the only one that is capable of providing the bandwidth necessary for the film and video industry’s migration to digital studios and HDTV.
The technology offers a flow-controlled transmission of data up to 800Mbytes-per-second full duplex, which is more than eight times faster than Fibre Channel, ATM OC12 and Gigabit Ethernet, according to the company. The GSN technology also offers adapter latencies under 10 microseconds, the company claims, and is extremely efficient in CPU utilization.
SGI said its network technology will provide its current HIPPI customers with a migration path by consolidating multiple HIPPI connections with a single GSN interface. It is also one of the best technologies for consolidating multiple Gigabit Ethernet connections with a single GSN interface, SGI said. |
