mama, my guess would be that you support people taking 100% personal responsibility for their own retirement. i suspect starhawke believes the same thing. i could get behind the idea if everyone started at the same place.

i DON'T like govt inefficiency and just about anything they touch is done poorly.

i'm willing to give up some efficiency in order to help the needy.

i must admit that i see a lot of folks wasting their money in their youth. new cars every 3-5 years. outrageous car leases. just a couple examples. am i happy about supporting these folks' irresponsibility when they are older? not at all. but if i have to support them a bit to keep them out of the street, that is what i will do.

this is why early, middle and late education is the key to long term success. delayed gratification MUST be taught. the silliness of impressing friends with a nice car should be exposed as being extremely shallow (that's my story and i'm sticking to it! ;-). autos are the poorest of "investments."

people should use debt only when necessary - typically for a home. i never want to take a car lone (though i might borrow the money from my 401k, the wife is itching for a better car).

fiscal responsibility MUST be taught. we are cheating ourselves by not mandating it in school. bring math alive to children.
