Article...Beer-gate Alibi Unravels for Gore Dirty Trickster
Saturday November 4, 2000; 9:59 AM ET

Claims that the Gore campaign had no advanced knowledge of a Democratic operative's plan to sabotage George Bush's presidential bid unraveled Saturday morning, after NewsMax.com tested the operative's alibi.

Bush-hating Gore delegate Tom Connolly says he tried to fax court records of the Texas Governor's 1976 DUI arrest to the Gore campaign last week. But because the line was busy, he gave the story instead directly to WPXT TV reporter Erin Fehlau.

But Connolly couldn't have tried very hard to get the Gore folks on the line.

NewsMax.com was able to connect to the fax machine at Gore campaign headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee on the very first try Saturday morning, just three days before the election -- a time when their faxline should be as busy as it ever was.

Gore's Nashville fax shows a Washington identification number, making it clear the equipment was brought from D.C. when the veep moved his operation to Tennessee earlier this year.

What's more probable is that Connolly did get through to Gore central with his Bush DUI dirt -- but they told the diabolical Democrat that they didn't want their fingerprints all over the dirty trick. Go to the press directly, Connolly was likely instructed, to protect Gore's plausible deniability.

And that's exactly what he did with WPXT's Fehlau.

Clearly someone on Gore's team knew Connolly's stinkbomb was about to explode and made plans to immediately disseminate the info.

Fox News Channel's Carl Cameron, who broke the story nationally at 6 o'clock Thursday night, later reported that the Bush-DUI court records were blast-faxed to newsrooms all over the country just minutes after he went on the air. Cameron called the blast-faxing "a mystery." (See: Bush DUI Info Blast-Faxed Around the Country, Dems Ready to Pounce)

Unless Connolly did the blast-faxing (something he's not claimed credit for), it looks like somebody on Gore's team had the explosive documents all ready to go -- and probably obtained them when the Democratic dirty trickster successfully faxed the Bush records to Nashville in the first place.
