hawke, the problem, imho, isn't govt programs. the problem is almost all (ok, probably all) govt programs are mismanaged. the people that run them aren't any good. neither candidate will fix the problems. opm and nobody cares as long as they are getting "theirs." they'll just direct the money to their pork barrel programs. ok, bush is probably less bad than gore in this area.
hey, it's easy for a guy with well off parents to be "right" thinking. that is, until you find out you don't get any of that wealth ;-) (talking about me. nobody can figure you out... ;-)
i don't look for happiness in "things" so i don't value things as much as others do. i don't need a lot of "material" to live happy.
you know much better than others how a piss poor parents can adversely impact kids. "my welfare check isn't enough... i think i'll have another kid..." (poverty of the mond is the only TRUE poverty and it tends to get passed generation to generation). while i don't believe in universal equality (i try very hard to harness the power of incentive as a part of my job and universal equality works against this), i do think it is reasonable to provide some level of living standard (not comfort, mind you) and hope to unleash the potential many of these disadvantage kids have 9they have a lot of energy that can be directed either for good or bad, i prefer good). wrt the poor elderly, i think they at least deserve a roof over their head and some food. many fought and died (and many others sacrificed dearly for the effort) for the freedoms we take for granted. surely, that is "worth" something to those who haven't been fortunate enough to live the american dream.
i'm about efficiency. if i can spend $1.00 to add $10.00 to my community, i'll consider it... seriously... i had spending $1.00 to get $0.33 benefit - and that is all the selfish b* in washington are capable of. that is their "core competence," if you will.
that is why i would educate children in personal finance. fiscal responsibility is key to our nation's success and we don't teach it. it may be our downfall.
jhp, imho, is EXACTLY the problem with the voting public. how much will you give ME to get my vote? not how good is a program for america's long term future. i now know why every nation eventually falls and that is PRECISELY the attitude.
ok, this is unrealistically idealistic. "a good govt program." i do battle whether a mismanaged govt program (all but guaranteed) is better than no program and these idiot leaders make it a horse race they are so inept.
i do so hate to see us drop to the lowest common denominator in washington. it strains most people's back to go that low.
happy picking your poison on tuesday! :-(
anyway, we agree to disagree.
hey, at least my car didn't need to pull into every truck weigh station it passed... ;-) |
