Skeets, just wanted to add a comment to your statement: hawke, the problem, imho, isn't govt programs. the problem is almost all (ok, probably all) govt programs are mismanaged. the people that run them aren't any good. neither candidate will fix the problems. opm and nobody cares as long as they are getting "theirs." they'll just direct the money to their pork barrel programs. ok, bush is probably less bad than gore in this area
The problem is actually the appointment of the heads of federal agencies as political appointees. There are no competency requirements and these head of the agency appointments are simply used as politcal largess for the faithful. If that is not bad enough, the career bureaucrats are leaving in droves. This is any thing but surprising when one considers the amount of non satisfying work that civil servants put up with. I know that myth precedes me here, but, in reality the federal employees that I know, work harder, longer for less pay than their counterparts in the private sector. Plus the federal gov. is incredibly chicken shiit in its work environment. For example, my wife, who works for the federal gov. can work 12 hours in a day getting reports out, but, she won't get compensation for the extra time and, if she needs to run some errands during her lunch hour the next day, and runs a few minutes late, she has to sign for annual leave. I'm continuously amazed at the system.
So, the system's fault is fundamental: it won't be changed until political appointments are abolished and pork barrel programs cease to exist. Fat Chance. Lew |
