I hate to defend AT&T wireless, but there are some prevalent misconceptions. AT&T did not make the choice to deploy TDMA. TDMA was being deployed when they bought the cellular business. All of this was long before Mike Armstrong became CEO. AT&T wireless has been very successful in growing their business, not because of technology, but because of excellent marketing and brand recognition. AT&T will definitely have to change technologies as they transition to 3G. EDGE isn't going to be the answer! I don't think that the choice will be influenced by corporate ego. Lucent was actively pushing CDMA while it was still part of AT&T. AWE has to milk all they can out of their 2G system before changing technologies. Wireless data is forcing that change sooner than they would like. It will be very interesting to see what they do. Keep in mind that the vast majority of wireless customers don't know TDMA from CDMA, they understand price & features. CDMA will soon have a large advantage in both price & features with 1X.

I agree that AWE tracking stock IPO was a sham! We can hold Mike Armstrong directly responsible for that.
