Reagan was probably hands down psychologically the brightest president of the past half century

There was a nice long piece in the Nyer about how he'd handled Gorbachev, and one great incident--there he was in Russia for their first meeting, on a wintry overcast day, and Gorbachev was coming to meet him at the rather palatial house he'd been put up in. Gorbachev came out of his limo all bundled up in his dark coat and scarf. Reagan had decided to go without a coat in spite of the freezing weather. He stood on the steps, smiling, in a blue suit, tall, sunny, at ease, as Gorbachev came up huddled in his coat. It seemed as if Reagan were welcoming Gorbachev, not the opposite; and Reagan who was at home. Reagan's aides knew he'd won the first round in that moment.

That is more than psychologically bright, it's psychologically brilliant.
