Unbelievable: Thanks you confirmed my suspicions about the info not being transmitted with the trade. I have only used one trading service and it requires me to specify whether a sale or purchase is long or short. A service could as you say infer from the positions held whether or not one is trading long or short but that seems dangerous unless the service comes back say when you sell more shares than you have in your account and asks you if you really intend to go short on the remaining shares. Suppose you put and mistype the quantity being sold -- Even with the safe guards my service provides, I once placed a trade to sell a position I was in when I was tired. I didn't realize I was using a previous trade screen I had used to do a short sale on another security and just changed the symbol(the quantity was correct) and submitted the trade. The next day I checked my account, I had not only the long position I had wished to sell but an identical short position which was now at a loss. DUMB DUMB DUMB Does not pay to be in a hurry and trade when you are tired. Maybe I could start a DUMB TRADE thread to share anecdotes. GH
