Every state has performance measures for schools. Do we need more federal regulation in this area? I don't know.

That is not the key issue. The key issues in education are (1) attracting the best and brightest young people to the teaching profession. How can we do this? (2) Lowering class sizes. How can we do this? (3) Upgrading schools. Many school buildings in our cities are falling apart.

This is where the emphasis ought to be, not on the phony Republican ploy of school vouchers, which is nothing more than a lame attempt to get Catholics to vote Republican.

By the way, take a close look Wednesday at what happens with the voucher initiatives in California and Michigan. Both will go down in flames, and rightly so.
