There is some incredible wealth here, in the hands of a few. Things haven't changed much from the days of the plantations, in some ways. Things changed for the better for everyone in the 60's here. In ways Alabama is far beyond most places I've been in terms of getting along with each other when it comes to race. That's a plus. But there are the few rich and the serfs, and a few inbetween. Never rise too far from your position. Fob did, but he was a star football player.

Cars are a major social symbol here. It doesn't reflect on the finances of the person. They gotta have 'em. Classic cars are a dime a dozen here. Any old car freak would have a blast and could rent a trailor to haul some home.

There have been inroads, but they are small. Montgomery is the capital, but drive on out into the blackbelt. Bad news.
Birmingham is becoming one big hospital, but most the workers don't make much and are over-worked. There are some gorgeous neighborhoods around the city and outside, though. One consequence of a depressed area is that housing stays cheaper.
