CenturyTel to sell PCS licenses for $205 million
MONROE, La., Nov 6 (Reuters) - Local telephone exchange carrier CenturyTel Inc. (NYSE:CTL - news) on Monday said it agreed to sell 30 wireless-telecommunications licenses to Leap Wireless International Inc. (NasdaqNM:LWIN - news) for about $205 million.

The Monroe, La.-based company, which targets rural areas and small towns, will sell 30 PCS (Personal Communication Service) spectrum licenses, which provide wireless services to markets in five states with a total population of 7 million.

``The sale of these nonstrategic assets will enable us to reduce debt and provides us with additional flexibility to pursue other growth opportunities,'' said Glen Post, president and chief executive officer.

The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2001.

Leap Wireless, a San Diego-based provider of wireless communications services, was spun off in 1998 from wireless phone technology company Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news).
