The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition that the end of the civil war in Zaire has boosted the prospects of several Canadian junior mining companies. Reporter David Thomas says, however, that while the overthrow of dictator Mobutu Sese Seko has brightened the investment climate, most analysts warn that the central African country, since renamed Democratic Republic of the Congo, is still full of hazards. That said, investors with a high tolerance for risk can take heart that the country's mineral resources are rich as its citizens are poor. The quality of the assets are clearly exceptional, but they require hundreds of millions of dollars to develop, according to Mike Westcott, an analyst with Goepel Shields. Analyst Dorothy Atkinson of Whalen Beliveau says the end of hostilities signals a buying opportunity for risk-tolerant investors. Ms Atkinson has upgraded International Panorama Resource from a "buy" to a "strong buy ." International Panorama has maintained close ties with rebel leader Laurent Kabila throughout the uprising and its management is confident its copper-cobalt venture will proceed under the new regime.
