Think zinc. While zinc lozenges haven't lived up to their early promise, a new product may be worth trying. Experts have found that the zinc-laced over the counter nasal gel called Zicam can significantly reduce the course of a cold. A multicenter study of more than 100 patients found that those who took Zicam within 24 hours of developing symptoms were ill for about two days, versus nine days for those who took a placebo.
