WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Clinton kept mostly out of the public eye on election eve but gave voters around the country an earful as he called around to radio stations stumping for Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore.

Working from the White House map room, Clinton spent Monday afternoon making more than a dozen calls to radio stations in battleground states. He urged Gore supporters to get out and vote in a race going down to the wire.

"It's too close to call. I think the important thing is that the side that wants to win the most will probably win. There is no question in my mind that Vice President Gore and (running mate Sen. Joseph Lieberman) will win," Clinton said in a call to radio station WBBM in Chicago.

Democrats are counting on a massive get-out-the vote effort to bring African-Americans, union members and other core supporters to the polls for Gore.

"What we've got to do is ... get a bigger vote out. The bigger the vote the better it is for Gore and Lieberman," Clinton said.

Although Clinton had spent the previous few days campaigning for Gore on a circuit carefully defined by the vice president, he did not campaign in public Monday.

His only public event of the day was a bill signing for third-world debt relief before an appreciative crowd of advocates in the White House East room.
