SGI Japan Wins Giant Linux Cluster System Order
Tuesday, November 7, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--SGI Japan Ltd. has received an order from the Ministry of Education's Institute of Statistical Mathematics for what will be one of the largest cluster systems built in Japan -- comprising 100 servers all running under the Linux operating system.

A cluster system is a group of connected computers that operate in parallel as if they were a single system. The institute chose to use Linux servers for its cluster because it will allow them to build a large-scale parallel-processing system at a relatively low cost.

SGI Japan will build the cluster system from a group of 100 Linux-compatible SGI1200 servers, each equipped with an 800MHz Pentium III processor. The system should be up and running by January.

SGI Japan is busy expanding its lineup of Linux servers and plans to establish a new marketing division to focus on sales of Linux systems. The company intends to take advantage of the present order to win more orders for large-scale Linux systems.
